RailPodTM vehicles are an exciting new form of rail transit and the RailPodTM system can serve a variety of market areas from passenger services to freight delivery. Click on one of the categories at the left to get some answers.

General Questions:

 Q1: Does it use both rails or just one rail?
  • RailPodTM vehicles use just one rail. This allows two vehicles to travel on the same railroad track without building new tracks or adding expensive infrastructure.
Q2: How does the RailPodTM stabilize on one rail?
  • In order to ensure safety, two methods of stabilization are integrated into the vehicle. RailPodTM vehicles use two drag arms to provide physical contact with the ground at low speeds and when the vehicle is stopped. While the vehicle is moving, the gyroscopic effects of an electric motor stabilize the vehicle. The vehicle stabilizes in a very similar way as that of a bicycle balancing, but has the added assurance of drag arms to keep it upright.
Q3: How is the RailPodTM powered?
  • The RailPodTM is powered by a small and efficient electric motor. A set of batteries is built into the base of the vehicle and is re-charged at stations or via an on-board generator.
Q4: Can the RailPodTM System use solar power?
  • Yes, RailPodTM vehicles are electric, so they can be charged by any form of alternative energy source. An example would be to populate the roof of a station with solar panels to charge the RailPodTM vehicles while they are at rest.
Q5: Do RailPodTM vehicles use gasoline or diesel fuel?
  • This will depend on the application area of the RailPodTM vehicle. Over short distances, RailPodTM vehicles will only use batteries. Over longer distances, they will utilize a small and efficient on-board gasoline or diesel generator to re-charge the batteries. 
Q6: How many miles per gallon does a RailPodTM get?
  • Although the vehicle is electric, a small generator re-charges the on-board batteries. RailPodTM vehicles will achieve over 100 miles per gallon (MPG).
Q7: What if there is a train on the track at the same time as the RailPodTM?
  • RailPodTM vehicles do not operate on the same track at the same time as a traditional train. As an additional precaution physical barriers will separate RailPodTM vehicles from traditional trains. The vehicles have sensors that identify where other RailPodTM vehicles and obstacles are to ensure the safety of passengers.
Q8: How is the RailPodTM certified? Who regulates the vehicle?
  • The RailPodTM system will be regulated and certified under the Federal Railway Administration (FRA) and the Federal Transit Administration (FTA). RailPodTM operations will likely fall under 49 CFR Part 211 (Appendix A).
Q9: Does the RailPodTM use an electrified third rail? 
  • No, the RailPodTM vehicle currently does not utilize a third rail. However, future versions could include a connection to overhead catenary power lines or a protected third rail to eliminate the need of a generator in each vehicle.
Q10: When can my organization buy a RailPodTM?
  • A RailPodTM vehicle is currently being tested and the design is being formalized. We'll post updates to our website as progress is made. Refundable deposits are being accepted to secure a spot in production.
Q11: How fast does it go?
  • The max speed will be dependent upon the quality of track, but in most cases you'll see average speeds of 30 MPH.
Q12: Are you a publicly traded company and can I buy stock?
  • We are a private company based in Massachusetts. Stock options are not available at this time.
Q13: How much does the vehicle weigh?
  • The empty weight of the vehicle is still being finalized as we continue to refine our design and complete testing. It is estimated to weigh less than 1000 pounds.


Passenger Questions:

Q1: Who drives the RailPodTM?
  • The vehicle is driver-less, allowing the passenger to sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride. 
Q2: How do I control the vehicle and tell it where I want to go and where I want to stop?
  • A touch screen is located inside the passenger compartment. You will select your destination and the vehicle will route you in the most direct path without stopping at any other station. If you change your mind en-route, you simply input your new destination on the touch screen and the vehicle will re-route the RailPodTM to your new destination.
Q3: How many people can it carry?
  • RailPodTM vehicles are designed for two passengers, one in front of the other, not side-by-side. 
Q4: I have railroad tracks running through my backyard. Can I put one of these on those tracks?
  • Probably not. The vehicle is sold as part of a system that is monitored and operated by a certified organization. 
Q5: How long do I have to wait for a vehicle at a station?
  • We hope you never have to wait for a RailPodTM vehicle at a station! The RailPodTM vehicle waits for you at the station. If all of the vehicles are gone, you can be assured that a RailPodTM will be available within minutes.
Q6: Can I take my bicycle in a RailPodTM?
  • Yes! We have designed the RailPodTM to accept a bicycle. The bicycle won't attach to the outside of the vehicle but will travel with you inside the passenger compartment!
Q7: How many bags of groceries can I fit in the RailPodTM?
  • Paper or plastic? There is a lot of space to fit grocery bags, luggage and such. In the rare case where you have too much luggage for your own compartment, you can place your luggage in the secondary passenger compartment.
Q8: What if I get a vehicle that is dirty or damaged?
  • We monitor the use and cleanliness of each vehicle every day. If you receive a vehicle that doesn't meet your needs, you can request another vehicle. The dirty or damaged vehicle will be sent directly to a repair station.
Q9: Are there cameras in the vehicles?
  • Yes, but they are there for your safety and protection. We do not use the cameras to identify you or track you, but utilize the camera to ensure your safety and the cleanliness of the vehicle. The cameras are monitored 24/7 to prevent theft, enhance security, and ensure your safety.
Q10: How much does it cost to ride in a RailPodTM?
  • Rider fares will be very similar to that of a commuter rail or a subway system. 
Q11: Is the vehicle handicap accessible and how do I gain access in a wheelchair?
  • Yes, the vehicle is accessible via wheelchair. A ramp is integrated into the door to provide a seamless transition from the platform into the vehicle.
Q12: Do I have to travel with another passenger or can I ride by myself?
  • We've designed the vehicle for 2 people. The first person to arrive at the vehicle has the rights to allow a second passenger to gain access to the vehicle. If you want to ride by yourself, feel free.
Q13: What if I have an emergency and need to get out of the RailPodTM?
  • The vehicle has an emergency stop button that will rapidly stop the vehicle. In addition, there is a communications system built into each vehicle so that if you have a question or a problem, you can ask for help and talk to one of our emergency operators.
Q14: Will I be safe in a RailPodTM? Who monitors the RailPodTM?
  • Passenger safety is our primary concern! RailPodTM vehicles are not operated at the same time as a traditional train, eliminating the possibility of a train and RailPodTM incursion. In the event that something does happen, a support team will respond immediately to the situation.
Q15: Can I bring my dog?
  • Sure, there is plenty of room for Spot.
Q16: Can I surf the web while I'm in the RailPod?
  • RailPodTM vehicles will offer WiFi access in each vehicle, allowing you to surf on your own computer, PDA, or iPhone!
Q17: Does the RailPodTM have air conditioning and heat?
  • Yes, each passenger will have heat and air conditioning controls.
Q18: I'm pretty tall, will I fit in the RailPodTM?
  • The doors are wide and the legroom is plentiful. The vehicles are designed for comfort for all shapes and sizes.



Freight Questions:
Q1: Can I deliver packages without having to ride in the vehicle?
  • Authorized package delivery companies that have appropriate credentials will be able to use the vehicles to ship packages and freight. The vehicle will accept a variety of pallet sizes. Each vehicle can be programmed to travel to its appropriate destination.
Q2: As a courier can I ship individual packages?
  • Yes, you can ride with the package or without it. If you ship the package without an attendant you'll need someone to pick it up on the other end.
Q3: I ship freight once a week on my rail. Can I use these vehicles when I'm not using my traditional equipment?
  • Yes, the RailPodTM System can supplement your existing freight operations. The infrastructure remains in place for your traditional freight operations. RailPodTM vehicles are stored on sidings or other locations away from your conventional equipment. 
Q4: Can I configure the interior for specific goods?
  • Yes, the RailPodTM team will work with you to configure the interior of the vehicle to accommodate the specific product that you want to move, whether it is grain, frozen food, or fresh vegetables to be delivered to the city farm stand.
Q5: Is the vehicle climate controlled?
  • Yes, the vehicle can be outfitted with climate control equipment based on the customer needs.
Q6: What is the maximum gross shipping weight?
  • Although each vehicle weighs less than 1,000 pounds, the vehicle can carry much more! Custom suspensions can be installed on your fleet of vehicles to meet your application needs.
Q7: How do I load the vehicle?
  • The vehicle is accessed from a large side door that hinges open to provide over 74 inches of access. Once the cargo is in the vehicle it can be slid along a rolling floor.
